Profiles, plans and Meta's fee

Customer.io WhatsApp Pricing and Integration Cost for US Teams

Customer.io does not charge per WhatsApp message. It charges for the people you message. Put in your profile count and monthly sends to see what WhatsApp adds to your Customer.io bill, and what the same sends cost on a flat WhatsApp campaign plan.

Billing rules read from Customer.io's own pricing page and billing documentation.

Customer.io WhatsApp cost check

Essentials, US utility
Extra profile cost a month $171.00
Meta fee at $0.0034 $34.00
WhatsApp on Customer.io $205.00
WaBulkSend plan plus Meta $133.00

Profile cost uses the Essentials plan ($100 a month with 5,000 profiles) and Customer.io's published overage of $0.009 per profile. Customer.io may quote a larger plan instead of billing overage. Meta's fee is for US utility templates. WaBulkSend has no contact limit on paid plans.

Customer.io does not charge for WhatsApp messages. Meta bills its own per message fee to your WhatsApp Business Account, $0.0034 for a US utility template, and Twilio adds $0.005 per message if you connect WhatsApp through Twilio. WhatsApp itself is included on every Customer.io plan.

The cost hides in the contacts. Customer.io bills by profiles, so every phone number you load to message on WhatsApp is a billable profile. Essentials starts at $100 a month for 5,000 profiles, and each profile above that costs $0.009. A phone-only list is where a free channel becomes a real line on the invoice.

Customer.io plans and what WhatsApp costs on each

Customer.io lists WhatsApp (Native) as included on all three plans. The difference between them, for a WhatsApp program, is how many profiles you get and what each extra one costs.

Contract data fills in what the pricing page leaves to sales. Vendr reports a median Customer.io contract of $28,350 a year across 58 purchases, from $9,989 to $145,106, with buyers saving 21.61% on average against the first quote. For Meta's fee in other countries and categories, see our WhatsApp Business API pricing page.

Why a phone-only WhatsApp list raises your Customer.io bill

Most Customer.io accounts start as email programs. The profile count tracks the email list, and the plan is sized to it. WhatsApp changes that the moment you import customers who have a phone number and an opt-in but were never on the email list: point of sale buyers, phone orders, appointment bookings, leads from a click-to-WhatsApp ad.

Each of those is a new profile. Customer.io's billing documentation uses a high watermark: any profile that existed at any point in the billing period counts, even if you delete it before the period ends. If an integration re-adds profiles you deleted, you pay for both.

That makes the price of WhatsApp on Customer.io depend less on how many messages you send and more on how many people you keep. A store that sends one shipping update to 50,000 phone-only customers a month pays for 50,000 profiles, not for 50,000 messages.

10,000$145 a month$34Pro, $99
25,000$280 a month$85Enterprise, $299
50,000$505 a month$170Enterprise, $299
100,000$955 a month$340Enterprise, $299

Essentials column: $100 plan plus $0.009 for each profile above 5,000, assuming the WhatsApp contacts are the whole account. At these sizes Customer.io's sales team may move you to Premium, where the overage rate drops to $0.004 but the plan starts at $1,000 a month. Meta's fee is the same on both tools because it is billed to your own WhatsApp account.

Customer.io WhatsApp integration through Meta or Twilio

There are two ways to connect WhatsApp to Customer.io, and the one you pick decides whether a second vendor bills you per message.

Native, through your Facebook Business Account

  • Go to Workspace Settings, WhatsApp, and connect your WhatsApp Business account in Meta's signup flow.
  • You pay Meta's fee only. No extra per message charge from a middle provider.
  • Templates are created and approved in WhatsApp, then selected in Customer.io. You do not write the message body in Customer.io.
  • Newer Customer.io accounts can only connect WhatsApp this way.

Through Twilio, for accounts already on Twilio SMS

  • WhatsApp rides on Customer.io's SMS setup. You register the WhatsApp sender in Twilio, then ask Customer.io to enable WhatsApp.
  • Twilio charges $0.005 per WhatsApp message on top of Meta's fee. At 50,000 messages that is $250 a month.
  • Messaging Service SIDs are not supported, so every send needs a single sender ID.
  • Customer.io cannot tell which Twilio senders are WhatsApp approved. Name them clearly. Our Twilio WhatsApp pricing page has the full Twilio rate card.

Customer.io WhatsApp for US customers in 2026

Meta has not delivered marketing templates to US phone numbers since April 1, 2025. The send fails with error 131049 on every platform, Customer.io included. So a US WhatsApp program on Customer.io is built from utility templates (order, shipping, account and appointment updates), authentication codes, and replies inside the 24-hour window.

Inbound works through automations. Customer.io can start a workflow from an inbound WhatsApp message and branch on the message body, but it does not parse keywords for you the way it does for SMS, so a "YES" or "STOP" branch is something you build. Replies are credited to the original message if they arrive within 72 hours.

Since October 1, 2026, Meta also bills replies inside the 24-hour window after the first 1,000 per business number each month. That fee lands on your WhatsApp account, not on Customer.io. Details on what still reaches US numbers are on our WhatsApp marketing messages page.

Customer.io vs a dedicated WhatsApp campaign tool

Customer.io is a messaging automation platform for email, push, SMS, in-app and WhatsApp. WaBulkSend does one job, WhatsApp campaigns to an opted-in list. Here is where each one wins.

Best forProduct-led teams adding WhatsApp to existing email and push journeysTeams with large phone lists who need WhatsApp campaigns and reminders at a flat price

Many teams run both: event-triggered journeys stay in Customer.io for the email audience, and high-volume WhatsApp notices to the phone list go from a flat plan on a second number. The same trade-off for other platforms is on our Braze WhatsApp pricing and Klaviyo WhatsApp integration pages.

How to send WhatsApp campaigns to a phone list without adding profiles

1

Keep the phone list out of Customer.io

Leave phone-only contacts where they live today, so they never become billable profiles.

2

Connect your WhatsApp number

Add your own business number to WaBulkSend. A second number keeps campaign quality ratings separate from Customer.io sends.

3

Import and pick a template

Upload a CSV or Excel file, map the variables and choose an approved utility template for US contacts.

4

Schedule and track

Send now, schedule, or set it to repeat, then see delivered, read and replied per recipient.

Keep each customer's consent record with the number when you move a list between tools. Our guide to WhatsApp opt-in requirements covers what Meta expects you to be able to show, and our cheapest WhatsApp API provider comparison shows where per message markups start to matter.

Questions buyers ask about Customer.io WhatsApp pricing

Does Customer.io charge for WhatsApp messages?

No. Customer.io's billing documentation states that it does not charge for WhatsApp messages. Meta charges a per message fee by template category and recipient country, billed to your WhatsApp Business Account, and Twilio adds $0.005 per message if you send WhatsApp through Twilio. What Customer.io bills is the plan and the profiles in your account.

Does Customer.io support WhatsApp?

Yes. WhatsApp (Native) is listed as included on the Essentials, Premium and Enterprise plans. You connect your Facebook Business Account in Workspace Settings, or connect through Twilio if your account already sends SMS through Twilio. Newer accounts can only connect directly through Meta. Messages are sent from templates approved in WhatsApp.

How much does Customer.io cost?

Customer.io's pricing page lists Essentials from $100 a month billed monthly with 5,000 profiles and 1 million emails, Premium from $1,000 a month billed yearly, and Enterprise on a custom quote. Profiles above your allowance cost $0.009 each on Essentials and $0.004 on Premium and Enterprise. Vendr reports a median contract of $28,350 a year across 58 purchases.

Do WhatsApp contacts count as Customer.io profiles?

Yes. Every person you message in Customer.io is a profile, and profiles are what Customer.io bills. Billing uses a high watermark, so any profile that existed during the billing period counts, even if you delete it. A list of phone-only WhatsApp contacts imported on top of your email audience raises the profile count and the bill.

Can Customer.io send WhatsApp through Twilio?

Yes, for accounts that already send SMS through Twilio. You set up SMS first, register a WhatsApp sender in Twilio, then ask Customer.io to enable WhatsApp for the account. Twilio charges $0.005 per WhatsApp message on top of Meta's fee, Messaging Service SIDs are not supported, and newer accounts can only connect directly through Meta.

Can Customer.io send WhatsApp marketing messages to US numbers?

Not in a way that delivers. Meta has not delivered marketing templates to US phone numbers since April 1, 2025, and the send fails with error 131049 whichever platform you use. Utility templates such as order and appointment updates, authentication codes and replies inside the 24-hour window still reach US numbers.

Does Customer.io support two-way WhatsApp conversations?

Partly. Customer.io can trigger an automation from an inbound WhatsApp message and branch on the message body, but it does not parse keywords for you the way it does for SMS. Replies are attributed to the original delivery if they arrive within 72 hours. It is a messaging automation tool, not a shared inbox for agents.

What is a cheaper alternative to Customer.io for WhatsApp campaigns?

If the job is WhatsApp campaigns and reminders to a large phone list, a dedicated WhatsApp campaign tool without per contact billing costs less. WaBulkSend Pro is $99 a month for up to 10,000 messages with no contact limit, and Meta's $0.0034 per US utility message is billed to your own account, so 10,000 US order updates cost $133. See all plans on our pricing page.
