Klaviyo WhatsApp Integration: Pricing, Setup, and the US Marketing Block

Klaviyo's WhatsApp channel is real and it is good. It also cannot send WhatsApp marketing to a US phone number, because Meta does not allow it from anyone. Here is what that means for your list.

Short answer: Klaviyo does have a native WhatsApp channel, launched in 2025, billed with the same credits as its SMS product and built into the same flows and segments as email. It works well if your WhatsApp audience is outside the United States. It cannot send WhatsApp marketing messages to US phone numbers, and neither can any other provider, because Meta blocks marketing-category templates to US numbers. Klaviyo says so on its own product page: "Meta does not currently support WhatsApp marketing messages to US phone numbers." If your list is mostly American, WhatsApp is still worth running, just for order updates, alerts, passcodes, and conversations customers start themselves.

Last updated July 2026. Klaviyo is a trademark of Klaviyo, Inc. WaBulkSend is not affiliated with or endorsed by Klaviyo.

What Klaviyo's WhatsApp channel actually does

Klaviyo describes it plainly on its product page: "Klaviyo offers native channel support for WhatsApp, with all the integrations and ease-of-use you expect from email or SMS." That is an accurate description. WhatsApp sits alongside email, SMS, and push in the same campaign builder, the same flows, and the same segmentation, drawing on the same customer profiles. You can trigger a WhatsApp message from any customer action, sequence it after an email, and report on all of it together.

The channel covers marketing campaigns, utility and transactional messages, and two-way service conversations. It supports rich media, carousels, and quick replies. Opt-in can be collected through WhatsApp forms, an email content block, or Shopify consent at checkout, and Klaviyo requires explicit consent before you send anything.

Klaviyo also acts as your WhatsApp provider, in Meta's language a Business Solution Provider. It publishes documentation on migrating a number from another WhatsApp provider into Klaviyo, which tells you what you need to know about how the plumbing works: your number lives with one provider at a time.

The part most comparison pages leave out

On April 1, 2025, Meta stopped delivering marketing-category WhatsApp templates to United States phone numbers. Klaviyo's own deliverability documentation states it: "As of April 1, 2025, Meta will block WhatsApp marketing messages sent to US phone numbers." The send fails with error code 131049. As of July 2026, Meta has announced no resume date.

This is worth being precise about, because it is easy to read as a knock on Klaviyo, and it is not. The block sits at Meta's platform layer. It applies identically to Klaviyo, to Twilio, to us, and to every other provider connected to the WhatsApp Business Platform. No vendor can sell you a way around it. If a tool promises WhatsApp promotional blasts to a US list, it is automating WhatsApp Web through an unofficial gateway, and the phone number you connect will eventually be banned for it.

Credit where it is due: Klaviyo publishes the restriction on its own marketing page, above the fold of the FAQ. Most competitors bury it. Klaviyo is also candid about who the channel is for, arguing that "many American companies are selling in international markets where WhatsApp adoption is near universal." That is exactly right, and it is the honest use case.

What reaches a US number, by message category

Identical on Klaviyo, on WaBulkSend, and on every provider. These are Meta's rules.

Message category Example Reaches a US number Billed
Marketing Promotion, newsletter, cart nudge No, error 131049 On delivery
Utility Order confirmed, shipped, payment due Yes On delivery
Utility, inside an open service window Follow-up to a customer question Yes Free
Authentication One-time passcode, login code Yes On delivery
Service reply Any answer within 24h of their message Yes Free
Anything within 72h of a click-to-WhatsApp ad The free entry point Yes Free

A US-heavy WhatsApp program is cheaper than people expect, because so much of what still delivers is free: service replies and utility templates inside an open window carry no charge.

Klaviyo WhatsApp pricing and setup

Pricing is credit-based and shared with SMS. Klaviyo's help center puts it directly: "In Klaviyo, WhatsApp messages are billed as credits using the same system as SMS." One credit pool covers both channels, and what a message costs depends on the destination country and the template category. Klaviyo does not bill for service messages, because those are not sent as WhatsApp templates. Klaviyo does not publish a flat per-message dollar rate, and neither does Meta, so treat any exact cent figure you find in a blog post as a guess. Use Klaviyo's own credit calculator against your real country mix.

Setup has two details that catch people out. First, you need a verified WhatsApp Business Account attached to your Meta Business Portfolio. You can bring a number you already own, but a WhatsApp number can only be active with one provider at a time, so switching means migrating off whoever has it now. Second, if you ask Klaviyo to supply a number, the number it provides is a UK phone number. For a brand selling into Europe that is fine. For a US brand it is another sign of where the channel is pointed.

One more thing worth checking before you commit: registering a phone number to the WhatsApp Business Platform removes it from the WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business consumer apps permanently. Whichever provider you pick, do not register the number your support team answers on a handset.

Klaviyo WhatsApp vs a dedicated WhatsApp platform

Including the rows where Klaviyo is clearly the better answer.

Question Klaviyo WaBulkSend
Runs on Meta's official Cloud API Yes Yes
Email, SMS and WhatsApp on one canvas Yes, and it is the reason to buy it No, WhatsApp only
Ecommerce data model and segmentation Excellent, a genuine strength Basic lists and attributes
Shopify consent capture at checkout Native, a genuine strength Via integration
WhatsApp marketing to US numbers No, Meta blocks it No, Meta blocks it
Utility and auth templates to US numbers Yes Yes
Number provided by the vendor UK number, paid accounts Bring your own
Billing model Credits shared with SMS Per message, Meta fees passed through
Depth of WhatsApp-specific tooling Newer channel, fewer WhatsApp-only features The whole product
Best for Klaviyo stacks with an audience outside the US WhatsApp-first senders who want one focused tool

If you already run email and SMS in Klaviyo and your WhatsApp audience is in Europe, Latin America, or Asia, adding Klaviyo's WhatsApp channel is the sensible move and this page is not trying to talk you out of it. The case for a dedicated tool is narrower: you want WhatsApp to be the product, not the fourth tab.

What a US brand should run on WhatsApp instead

The marketing template is blocked. Everything below still works, and most of it is free.

1

Let the customer open the window

The moment a customer messages you, a 24-hour customer service window opens. Inside it you can send anything, with no template and no charge. Put a click-to-chat link in your order emails and receipts and the window opens itself.

2

Send utility templates, not promos

Order confirmations, shipping updates, appointment reminders, payment and account alerts all reach US numbers. Delivered inside an open service window, utility templates are free. This is where the volume goes.

3

Use authentication templates

One-time passcodes and login codes deliver to US numbers without issue. For a store with accounts, this alone can justify the channel and it puts your brand in the customer's chat list.

4

Buy the free entry point with ads

Run a click-to-WhatsApp ad or add a WhatsApp button to your Facebook Page. Anyone who taps it opens a 72-hour window where every message both directions is free. This is the one compliant route to promotional conversation with a US customer.

If promotion to a US audience is the actual goal, the honest answer is that SMS is the channel for a US list, under 10DLC registration and TCPA consent. Run WhatsApp for the transactional and conversational half.

Frequently asked questions

Does Klaviyo support WhatsApp? +

Yes. Klaviyo launched a native WhatsApp channel in 2025 that sits alongside email, SMS and push in the same campaigns, flows and segments. It supports marketing campaigns, utility messages, two-way service conversations, rich media and carousels, with opt-in collected through WhatsApp forms, email blocks, or Shopify consent.

Is Klaviyo WhatsApp available in the US? +

You can set it up from a US account, but WhatsApp marketing messages will not reach US phone numbers. Klaviyo's own product page states that "Meta does not currently support WhatsApp marketing messages to US phone numbers." Utility templates, authentication templates, and replies inside the 24-hour service window do deliver to US numbers.

Can you send WhatsApp marketing messages to US phone numbers? +

No. Since April 1, 2025 Meta has blocked marketing-category WhatsApp templates to United States phone numbers, and the send fails with error code 131049. No resume date has been announced as of July 2026. This is a Meta platform rule, so it applies to Klaviyo, WaBulkSend, Twilio and every other provider equally.

How much does Klaviyo WhatsApp cost? +

WhatsApp is billed as credits from the same pool as Klaviyo SMS. The cost of a message depends on the recipient's country and the template category, and Klaviyo does not bill for service messages because they are not sent as templates. Neither Klaviyo nor Meta publishes a flat per-message dollar rate, so price your own country mix with Klaviyo's credit calculator.

Do I need a WhatsApp Business Account to use Klaviyo WhatsApp? +

Yes. You need a verified WhatsApp Business Account connected to your Meta Business Portfolio. You can bring a number you already own, though a WhatsApp number can be active with only one provider at a time, so you must migrate it off your current provider first. Klaviyo can also supply a number to paid accounts, and that number is a UK phone number.

Can I keep my existing WhatsApp number when moving to Klaviyo? +

You can migrate a number between WhatsApp providers, because a number is active with one provider at a time. What you cannot do is use a number that is currently live on the WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business consumer app: registering it to the WhatsApp Business Platform removes it from those apps permanently.

Is Klaviyo WhatsApp better than a dedicated WhatsApp platform? +

It depends on your stack and your audience. If email and SMS already run in Klaviyo and your WhatsApp customers are outside the US, Klaviyo wins on segmentation, ecommerce data and unified reporting. A dedicated WhatsApp platform makes sense when WhatsApp is the primary channel and you want deeper WhatsApp-specific tooling than a fourth channel usually gets.
