The short answer: for a US business, Twilio is cheaper per message and Wati is cheaper to get running. Twilio charges $0.005 per WhatsApp message on top of Meta's fee, so a delivered US utility template costs $0.0084 all in, with no monthly fee. Wati starts at $69 a month ($59 billed yearly) and bills US utility templates at $0.00612 on Growth and Pro. On price alone, Twilio wins below about 25,900 utility messages a month and Wati Growth wins above it.

That crossover is only half the decision. Twilio is an API with no inbox, no broadcast screen and no chatbot builder, so you pay a developer to build what Wati ships on day one. Wati is a finished app with seat limits and a markup that is larger than most comparison posts say. The figures below come from Twilio's WhatsApp pricing page and from Wati's own US billing data and rate cards, checked in September 2026.

The marketing row is the same for both because it is Meta's rule, not theirs. Meta stopped delivering marketing templates to US (+1) numbers in April 2025, and the pause still stands. For US recipients you are comparing utility, authentication and service messages.

Is Wati cheaper than Twilio?

Only at higher volumes. Wati's Growth plan costs $59 a month on yearly billing, and each US utility template is about $0.0023 cheaper than on Twilio. That saving covers the plan fee at roughly 25,900 messages a month, or about 30,300 if you pay Wati monthly at $69. Below that, Twilio's pay-as-you-go pricing is cheaper.

Here is the monthly bill for US utility templates, with Wati on Growth billed yearly and Twilio on standard pricing:

Utility templates a monthWati Growth (yearly)TwilioCheaper
1,000$65.12$8.40Twilio by $56.72
5,000$89.60$42.00Twilio by $47.60
10,000$120.20$84.00Twilio by $36.20
25,000$212.00$210.00About even
50,000$365.00$420.00Wati by $55.00
100,000$671.00$840.00Wati by $169.00

Two things move these numbers in practice. First, Growth caps you at three users with no way to add a fourth, so a support team of five is on Pro at $119 a month yearly, which pushes the crossover past 52,000 messages. Second, Twilio also bills $0.005 for every message a customer sends you. A support line that receives 10,000 WhatsApp messages a month adds $50 to the Twilio column and nothing to Wati's.

What does Twilio charge for WhatsApp?

Twilio charges a flat $0.005 per WhatsApp message, sent or received, and passes Meta's template fee through on top. There is no monthly platform fee and no setup fee. Messages that end in a failed status cost $0.001 each. For a US number, Meta's fee is $0.0034 for a utility or authentication template, so the delivered cost is $0.0084.

Twilio's price is simple and published, which is why it is the benchmark every other provider gets measured against. The cost that does not show on the pricing page is engineering. Twilio gives you an API and webhooks. The contact list, the opt-out handling, the template picker, the send scheduler and the delivery report are all yours to build and maintain. Our Twilio WhatsApp pricing page breaks the rates down per message type.

How much does Wati cost per month?

Wati costs $69 a month on Growth, $149 on Pro and $349 on Business when billed monthly, or $59, $119 and $279 a month billed yearly. Quarterly billing is exactly three months at the monthly price, so it saves nothing. Growth includes three users and does not allow more. Pro and Business include five, with extra users at $39 and $89 a month.

Wati does not print a US dollar price on its public page for every visitor; the figures load from its billing system by country. The message rates sit in per-plan rate cards. For US accounts, the July 2026 cards list utility and authentication at $0.00612 on Growth and Pro and $0.00544 on Business. Against Meta's $0.0034, that is an 80% markup on Growth and Pro and 60% on Business, well above the 20% figure that many comparison posts repeat. The full breakdown, add-ons included, is on our Wati pricing page.

Is Wati better than Twilio?

Wati is better if you want a working WhatsApp inbox and broadcast tool this week without a developer. Twilio is better if you are building messaging into your own product, send high volumes from code, or already run SMS on Twilio. They solve different problems, so the right question is who on your team will operate it.

Choose Wati when:

  • Your sales or support reps need to read and answer WhatsApp chats in a shared inbox.
  • You want no-code chatbots and keyword replies.
  • Nobody on the team writes code, or engineering time is committed elsewhere.

Choose Twilio when:

  • Messages are triggered by your own system: order updates, shipping notices, one-time passcodes.
  • You want one vendor for SMS, voice and WhatsApp with the same API.
  • You need detailed control over retries, fallbacks and logging.

What changes on October 1, 2026

Meta begins charging for service messages, the free-form replies you send inside the 24 hour customer service window, on October 1, 2026. Meta partners including 360dialog, ManyChat and Kommo publish the US rate as $0.0034 per message after 1,000 free per phone number each month. On Twilio, that Meta charge would sit on top of the $0.005 Twilio already bills per message. Wati's July 2026 rate card lists service conversations as free on current plans, so ask Wati in writing whether that changes after October 1 before you size a support plan. Our WhatsApp service messages page tracks the change and has a cost estimator.

One practical step applies on every provider: Meta will deliver the first 1,000 service messages a month without a payment method on file, but not the 1,001st. If you answer customers on WhatsApp, add a card in Meta's Billing Hub before the change.

The third option: a campaign tool with Meta's fee at cost

Many buyers comparing Wati and Twilio want one specific thing: send a WhatsApp message to a list of customers who opted in, on a schedule, and see who received it. For that job, Wati's inbox is more than you need and Twilio means building the tool yourself.

WaBulkSend covers exactly that job. You connect your own WhatsApp Business Account, import a CSV or Excel list, pick an approved template and schedule the send. Plans are $29, $99 and $299 a month by message volume, or half that billed yearly, and Meta bills its fee to your account at Meta's rate with nothing added. At 10,000 US utility templates a month that is $133 on monthly billing, or $83.50 on yearly, against $120.20 on Wati Growth and $84.00 on Twilio before any engineering cost. A common follow-up after an order update is a request for a review, and plenty of US stores send that reply straight into their customer review software so the feedback lands where the team already works.

If you are still weighing more providers, the cheapest WhatsApp API provider comparison shows where each vendor's price flips as volume grows, and our Sinch WhatsApp pricing page covers the other large CPaaS that US teams shortlist next to Twilio. Frequently asked questions

Which is cheaper for WhatsApp, Wati or Twilio?

Twilio is cheaper for most small US senders. With no monthly fee and $0.0084 per delivered US utility template, it costs less than Wati Growth until about 25,900 messages a month on Wati's yearly billing. Above that, Wati's lower per-message rate wins, as long as three seats are enough for your team.

Does Twilio charge for incoming WhatsApp messages?

Yes. Twilio's $0.005 fee applies to every WhatsApp message, inbound and outbound. Meta does not charge for messages customers send you, but Twilio does. A number that receives 20,000 customer messages a month pays Twilio $100 for them, which is worth counting if WhatsApp is a support channel.

Can Wati send bulk WhatsApp messages?

Yes. Wati's broadcast feature sends an approved template to a contact list or segment on every paid plan. For US numbers only utility and authentication templates are delivered, since Meta paused marketing templates to +1 numbers. Each delivered template is billed at the rate on your plan's rate card.

Is Wati an official WhatsApp Business API provider?

Yes. Wati connects to Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform as a Meta partner, and so does Twilio. With either one, your phone number and approved templates are registered to your own WhatsApp Business Account, so you can move them to another provider later without starting over.
