How Much Does WhatsApp Business Cost in 2026?

The WhatsApp Business app is free. The WhatsApp Business Platform bills per delivered template. Most businesses do not realize they are two completely different products with two completely different bills.

Short answer: the WhatsApp Business app is free to download and free to use, with no monthly fee and no per-message charge. The WhatsApp Business Platform, which is the API version companies use to send at scale, is not free: Meta bills per delivered template, roughly $0.0034 for a US utility message, plus whatever your sending platform charges on top. Which one you need depends entirely on whether you are messaging dozens of people or thousands.

Almost every confusing answer to this question comes from mixing up two products that share a name. Sort them out first and the pricing becomes simple.

The two WhatsApp Business products

The app costs nothing and always has. If you are a plumber, a salon or a single-location shop answering customers one at a time, that is where you should stop reading. It is genuinely free and it is enough.

What the WhatsApp Business Platform costs

The Platform is where the money is, and where the confusion starts. Meta charges per delivered template message, priced by template category and by the recipient's country. Since July 2025 there are no conversation bundles and no free allowance of 1,000 conversations. Older articles still describe that model. It is gone.

Using Twilio's published US rate card as a reference point, checked July 2026:

Message typeMeta fee (US)What it is for
Utility template$0.0034Order updates, shipping, receipts, reminders
Authentication template$0.0034Login codes and one time passcodes
Utility template inside an open 24h windowFreeCustomer messaged you in the last 24 hours
Free-form reply inside an open 24h windowFreeAny human reply in an active conversation
Marketing template to a US numberCurrently not deliverable. See below.

So a thousand order confirmations to US customers costs about $3.40 in Meta fees. That is the whole Meta bill. Two things get added on top.

1. Your sending platform

You do not talk to Meta's API by hand. Either you go direct to the Cloud API (no platform fee, but your engineers build everything), or you use a Solution Partner or campaign tool. Twilio, for example, adds $0.005 per message inbound and outbound, which you can see broken down on our Twilio WhatsApp pricing page. Campaign software typically charges a monthly plan and passes Meta's fee through at cost.

2. Your phone number

Registering a number to the Business Platform permanently removes it from the consumer WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business apps, and chat history does not transfer. Use a number you are willing to dedicate to the API. That is not a dollar cost, but it is a real one.

The US catch that changes the budget

Meta has paused delivery of marketing templates to US phone numbers, and the pause is still in force as of July 2026. Try one and it fails with error 131049. This applies to every provider, at every price. A template can be approved by Meta and still never reach a US handset.

What does work for US businesses today: utility templates, authentication templates and free-form replies inside the 24 hour window. That covers order confirmations, shipping and delivery updates, payment receipts, appointment reminders, account alerts and login codes. It does not cover a promotional blast to your customer list. If your plan was WhatsApp marketing to US numbers, the honest cost is not a number, it is that the messages will not arrive. WhatsApp order notifications are the use case that pays off for US senders right now.

Is the free WhatsApp Business app enough?

For a lot of businesses, yes. Ask three questions:

  • How many people do you message at once? The app's broadcast lists cap at 256 recipients, and messages only arrive if the recipient has saved your number in their contacts. Most customers have not. That single rule quietly kills the app as a bulk channel.
  • Does more than one person need to answer? The app lives on a phone. Team workflows do not fit.
  • Does it need to connect to anything? Order updates from your store, reminders from your booking system, alerts from your CRM: none of that is possible in the app.

If you answered yes to any of those, you need the Platform, and the free app is not a cheaper version of it. It is a different product.

A realistic monthly budget

BusinessWhat they sendMonthly cost
Local service businessOne to one chats in the free app$0
Small online store, 2,000 ordersOrder and shipping updates, 4,000 utility templatesAround $14 in Meta fees, plus software
Growing store, 25,000 ordersFull order lifecycle, 60,000 utility templatesAround $204 in Meta fees, plus software
SaaS with WhatsApp login codes100,000 authentication templatesAround $340 in Meta fees, plus software

Messaging fees, for most US businesses, are the small line. The software you send with, and the engineering time if you build it yourself, are the big ones. Small businesses that also invoice over WhatsApp often find the same thing on the finance side: sending the document is trivial, and the real work is getting the numbers back out, which is why so many end up needing to pull invoice line items into a spreadsheet rather than retyping them.

Frequently asked questions

How much does WhatsApp Business cost per month?

The WhatsApp Business app costs nothing per month. The WhatsApp Business Platform has no mandatory monthly fee from Meta either: you pay per delivered template, so a month with no sends costs nothing. Your monthly bill therefore comes from your sending software plan, not from Meta.

Is WhatsApp Business free?

The WhatsApp Business app is free to download and use, with no subscription and no per-message charge. The WhatsApp Business Platform is not free: Meta charges per delivered template by category and country, although free-form replies and utility templates sent inside an open 24 hour customer service window carry no Meta fee.

What is the difference between WhatsApp Business and the WhatsApp Business API?

The app is a phone application for one person handling conversations manually. The Platform, often called the API, is infrastructure for sending at scale with automation, integrations and team access. The app is free and cannot bulk send to non-contacts. The Platform is billed per template and can.

How much does a WhatsApp Business account cost to set up?

Nothing. Creating a WhatsApp Business Account and getting templates approved carries no Meta fee, and business verification is free. Costs begin when you deliver your first billable template. Some Solution Partners charge onboarding or monthly number fees, so check the provider rather than assuming Meta is charging you.

Does WhatsApp charge for incoming messages?

Meta does not charge for messages customers send to you. Some platforms do: Twilio bills its $0.005 per-message fee inbound as well as outbound. If you expect heavy two way conversations, that inbound fee is worth checking before you choose a provider.
