One personalized message per order, sent on the Cloud API.

Short answer: WhatsApp order notifications are automated messages that tell a customer their order was received, paid, shipped, out for delivery, or delivered. They are sent as approved utility templates on the WhatsApp Business Platform, one personalized message per order. Because they are utility (not marketing) messages, they deliver to US phone numbers, which is the practical reason ecommerce and retail teams use WhatsApp for order updates in 2026 even though promotional blasts to US numbers are currently paused. Upload your orders, map the fields, and WaBulkSend sends each buyer their own update through Meta's official Cloud API.

Last updated July 2026. WaBulkSend is built on Meta's official WhatsApp Cloud API and is not affiliated with Meta Platforms, Inc.

Order updates reach US customers when marketing messages do not

This is the detail most guides get wrong, so it is worth stating plainly. Since April 2025, Meta has paused delivery of marketing template messages to United States phone numbers, and there is no announced resume date. A promotional broadcast to a US customer simply does not arrive, and the send fails with error code 131049. Order notifications are different. They are utility templates, tied to a transaction the customer already made, and utility templates keep delivering to US numbers normally.

So if your goal is to reach US buyers on WhatsApp today, transactional order updates are the category that works. A "your order shipped" message goes through. A "20% off this weekend" blast to the same US number does not. Authentication messages, like login codes, also deliver. That split is why the most reliable WhatsApp use case for a US store right now is keeping people informed about orders they placed, not selling to them cold.

Message type Example Delivers to US numbers?
Utility (order updates) Order confirmed, shipped, delivered Yes
Authentication One-time login or verification code Yes
Service reply (in 24h window) Answering a customer who messaged you Yes, and free
Marketing Promotions, discounts, product launches No, paused since April 2025

Categories and delivery rules are set by Meta on the WhatsApp Business Platform. See our WhatsApp Business API pricing page for how each category is billed.

Every stage of the order, on WhatsApp

Cover the whole lifecycle with a small set of approved utility templates, each personalized per order.

Order confirmation

Confirm the order the moment it is placed, with the order number, items, and total, so the buyer knows it went through.

Payment and receipt

Send a payment received note or a receipt with the amount and order reference, useful when checkout and payment are separate steps.

Shipping and tracking

Tell the customer their order shipped, name the carrier, and include a tracking link they can tap.

Out for delivery

A same-day heads up that the package is on the truck, often with a delivery window, cuts missed deliveries and support tickets.

Delivered

Confirm the order arrived and invite a reply, which also opens a free 24-hour window to handle any issue.

Ready for pickup

For buy online, pick up in store, notify the customer the moment their order is ready and where to collect it.

Delay or backorder

Get ahead of a problem by telling the customer about a delay and the new estimate, before they open a ticket.

Return and refund

Confirm a return was received or a refund was issued, closing the loop on the order without an email that gets missed.

Review request

After delivery, ask for feedback or a review, a utility follow-up on a completed transaction rather than a cold promo.

How to send WhatsApp order notifications in four steps

Whether your orders live in Shopify, WooCommerce, or a spreadsheet, the flow is the same.

01

Get approved templates

Create a utility template for each stage you want to send: confirmation, shipping, delivery. Submit it to Meta for approval, which for genuine transactional wording is usually quick.

02

Bring your orders

Export orders to a CSV, or connect the store, so each row has the phone number in E.164 format plus the fields the message needs: name, order number, total, tracking link.

03

Map fields to placeholders

Point each column at a numbered placeholder in the template. The name column fills the greeting, the order column fills the reference, and a live preview shows the real message.

04

Send and track

Trigger the send, now or on a schedule, and WaBulkSend delivers one personalized message per order on the Cloud API, then reports delivered, read, and replied for each customer.

Order fields map to a personalized message

Any field in your order data can fill a placeholder. Here is a shipping template and the message a single order produces.

Order field Example value Template placeholder
name Dana Hi {{1}},
phone +14155550100 Recipient (not shown in text)
order_id 10482 your order #{{2}}
carrier USPS shipped via {{3}}
tracking_url usps.com/track/94001 Track it here: {{4}}

The customer receives: "Hi Dana, your order #10482 shipped via USPS. Track it here: usps.com/track/94001." Every other order gets its own name, number, carrier, and link from the same template.

Who sends order updates on WhatsApp

Online stores

Shopify and WooCommerce sellers add WhatsApp confirmation and shipping messages so buyers stop asking "where is my order" by email.

Local retail and pickup

Stores offering pickup send a "ready to collect" message that gets opened faster than email, cutting the counter wait.

Restaurants and food

Takeout and delivery kitchens confirm the order and send an "on its way" update with an estimated time.

Marketplaces and resellers

High-volume sellers push status updates for hundreds of daily orders from a single upload instead of one chat at a time.

Service and repair

Repair shops and dealerships notify customers when a job is booked, ready, or a part has arrived.

Subscription and renewals

Recurring businesses send a renewal or shipment-scheduled notice tied to the customer account, a utility update on an existing relationship.

What order notifications cost

Meta charges per message when a template is delivered, priced by category and the recipient's country. Utility messages, which is what order notifications are, sit in one of the cheapest categories. Better still, a utility template delivered inside an open 24-hour customer service window is free, and any free-form reply you send while that window is open is free too. In practice, a "delivered" message that invites a reply often opens that window, so a fair amount of your order-related conversation costs nothing.

Meta does not publish its United States per-message rates inside the developer docs, so be wary of any tool quoting an exact US cent figure. What matters for budgeting is the category: keep your order flow in utility and authentication messages, lean on the free service window for replies, and your per-message spend stays low. WaBulkSend passes Meta's fees through without a per-message markup of its own.

For a full breakdown of how each message category is billed, see our WhatsApp Business API pricing guide, and for the specifics of whether a given order message is free, read are WhatsApp order notifications free.

WhatsApp order notifications: common questions

Can you send order notifications on WhatsApp?

Yes. Order confirmations, shipping updates, and delivery alerts are sent as approved utility templates on the WhatsApp Business Platform. You create a template for each stage, map your order fields to its placeholders, and the platform sends one personalized message per order. This is the sanctioned way to notify customers, unlike automating the consumer app.

Do WhatsApp order notifications work for US customers?

Yes. Order notifications are utility messages, and utility templates deliver to United States phone numbers normally. Only marketing templates are paused to US numbers, a block in place since April 2025. So a shipping or delivery update reaches a US buyer, while a promotional blast to the same number would not.

Are WhatsApp order notifications free?

Some are. A utility template delivered inside an open 24-hour customer service window is free, and free-form replies in that window are free. Outside a window, Meta charges a small per-message fee for the utility category, priced by country. There is no fixed monthly free allotment of templates, so cost tracks how many you send.

What is the difference between a utility and a marketing message?

A utility message is tied to a specific transaction the customer made, like an order confirmation or shipping update. A marketing message promotes or sells, like a discount or launch. The categories are billed differently and, importantly for US businesses, marketing templates are currently paused to US numbers while utility templates still deliver.

How do I send order updates automatically from my store?

Connect your orders to a WhatsApp Business API tool. You can export orders to a CSV and upload them, or feed order data through an automation so a "shipped" message fires when a fulfillment status changes. Each order fills the template placeholders, and the message sends on the Cloud API without anyone typing it.

Do customers need to opt in to get order notifications?

You should have a lawful basis and clear opt-in to message customers on WhatsApp, and at checkout many stores collect consent to receive order updates on WhatsApp. Even for transactional messages, sending only to customers who agreed protects your number quality and keeps your account in good standing.

Can I send order notifications in bulk?

Yes. Upload a file of orders and the tool sends to every row, one personalized message each. Your ceiling is your WhatsApp messaging limit, which caps unique customers per rolling 24 hours and starts at 250 for new accounts before rising to 2,000, 10,000, 100,000, and then unlimited as your sending quality holds.
