WhatsApp Coexistence: Use the Business App and Cloud API on the Same Number
Connect your existing WhatsApp Business number to the official Cloud API without deleting the app, losing your contacts, or interrupting live chats. Keep answering from your phone, and send bulk campaigns and automations from the same number.
Official WhatsApp Cloud API. Same number, no app deletion, no unofficial bots.
WhatsApp Coexistence is a Meta feature, live since May 6, 2025, that lets a business run the WhatsApp Business app and the WhatsApp Cloud API on the same phone number at the same time. You keep your app, your contacts, and your ongoing conversations, and you gain API powers like bulk template campaigns, scheduling, chatbots, and a multi-agent shared inbox. New messages sync in both directions, so a chat you answer on your phone still shows up in your platform inbox. It removes the old all-or-nothing choice where connecting the API meant giving up the app for good.
How WhatsApp coexistence works
Before coexistence, moving a number to the Cloud API removed it from the Business app permanently. Coexistence changes that. During onboarding you pick the "connect an existing WhatsApp Business app" path, and Meta links the same number to a WhatsApp Business Account while the app keeps running on your phone.
Messaging echoes
Messages sent from the app appear in the API inbox, and messages the platform sends show up in the app. Your team never loses the thread, whichever side answers.
Contacts carry over
The contacts saved in your Business app sync to the API side, so your platform starts with the audience you already talk to instead of an empty list.
The app stays live
You keep tapping out one-to-one replies on your phone exactly as before. Nothing about your day-to-day chatting changes; you just gain a second, automated way to send.
What syncs, and what stays in the app
| Item | Coexistence behavior |
|---|---|
| One-to-one chats | New messages sync both ways in real time after setup |
| Saved contacts | Sync from the Business app to the API side |
| Media in 1:1 chats | Photos, videos, and documents sync across both sides |
| Group chats | Stay in the app only; the API does not handle groups |
| Status, calls, catalog and Shop | Remain app features and are not exposed to the API |
| WhatsApp Pay | Not supported while coexistence is active |
Historical chat handling depends on your provider and Meta's rollout; plan on your saved contacts and all new conversations carrying over, and treat older history as still living in the app.
Can your number use coexistence?
How to set up WhatsApp coexistence
Start the connection
Open the WhatsApp signup flow in your platform and choose to connect an existing WhatsApp Business app rather than register a brand-new number.
Log in with Facebook
Sign in through Meta's embedded signup and pick or create your Business Portfolio and WhatsApp Business Account. Your login stays with Meta, not the platform.
Confirm your number
Select the number that already runs your Business app and confirm it. Meta verifies the link through your connected Facebook business account.
Let the sync run
Onboarding usually takes a few minutes, then contacts and recent chats process in the background. Keep the app installed and open on your phone during this window.
Send and automate
Once linked, build approved templates, schedule campaigns, set auto-replies, and route chats to a shared inbox, all on the same number your customers already know.
Coexistence vs a full API migration
| Question | Coexistence | Full migration |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the Business app? | Yes, app keeps working | No, number leaves the app |
| Keep contacts and chats? | Contacts and new chats sync | Nothing imports; fresh start |
| Sending speed | Around 20 messages per second | Up to 80+ per second, upgradable |
| Groups, Status, catalog | Stay in the app | Not available |
| Best for | Small teams adding automation | High-volume senders going all-in |
Coexistence is the low-risk on-ramp: try API automation without burning a bridge back to the app. When your volume outgrows the roughly 20-per-second cap, you can move to a full Business API setup for higher throughput.
Does coexistence work in the United States?
Yes. Meta rolled coexistence out in waves through 2025 and into 2026, and the United States is supported. US businesses can link their Business app number to the Cloud API and start sending approved templates the same day.
One honest caveat that applies to every US account, coexistence or not: Meta has paused delivery of marketing template messages to US phone numbers since April 2025, with no announced restart. Utility templates (order updates, receipts, reminders, one-time codes) and any reply inside an open 24-hour customer service window still deliver to US numbers normally. So coexistence gives a US business the full toolkit for transactional messaging and live support today, while marketing blasts to US numbers remain on hold across the whole platform.

Who coexistence is built for
Growing small teams
You built a customer base on the Business app and now need auto-replies and campaigns without asking everyone to switch numbers.
Local shops and services
Keep answering regulars by hand on your phone, and layer in appointment reminders and order updates from the same line.
Cautious adopters
You want to test the API before committing. Coexistence lets you try it with a clean way back to the app if it is not for you.
Support plus outreach
Run live support in the app while scheduling opt-in follow-ups and utility notifications through automation.
Verified brand builders
Start the path toward higher limits and the verified name display without a disruptive cutover.
Seasonal senders
Handle everyday chats on the app, then spin up template campaigns for busy periods without a second setup.
Once your number is connected, run everything from one place: bulk template campaigns, auto-replies, and a shared inbox your whole team can work.
WhatsApp coexistence questions, answered
What is WhatsApp coexistence?
WhatsApp coexistence is a Meta feature, live since May 2025, that lets a business use the WhatsApp Business app and the WhatsApp Cloud API on the same phone number at the same time. You keep chatting from the app while a connected platform sends templates, runs automations, and works a shared inbox. New messages sync in both directions, so neither side loses the conversation.
Will I lose my chats and contacts when I connect the API?
No. That is the point of coexistence. Your saved contacts sync to the API side and your ongoing one-to-one conversations keep flowing, with new messages appearing on both the app and the platform. Before coexistence, connecting a number to the API removed it from the app; now the app stays live and your customer relationships stay intact.
Can I still send broadcasts from the WhatsApp Business app during coexistence?
You can keep using the app normally for one-to-one chats and its built-in broadcast lists. For real bulk sending, though, you use the API side, where you send approved template messages to large opted-in lists within Meta's rate limits. Messages you send from the app itself are always free; API template messages are billed by Meta.
Does WhatsApp coexistence work in the United States?
Yes, the United States is supported. US businesses can link their Business app number to the Cloud API and send approved utility templates and support replies right away. Note that Meta has paused marketing template delivery to US numbers since April 2025, so utility and transactional messaging work while marketing blasts to US numbers remain on hold platform-wide.
What are the limitations of coexistence?
Coexistence caps sending at roughly 20 messages per second, well below a full API setup. Group chats, Status, calls, catalog, Shop, and WhatsApp Pay stay app-only and are not exposed to the API. Companion devices like WhatsApp Web unlink at onboarding, and you must open the app periodically to keep the connection healthy. For very high volume, a full migration fits better.
How do I set up WhatsApp coexistence?
In your platform's WhatsApp signup flow, choose to connect an existing WhatsApp Business app instead of registering a new number. Log in through Meta's embedded signup, pick your Business Portfolio and account, confirm the number that runs your app, and let contacts and chats sync in the background. Keep the app installed and open during setup, then start sending templates and automations.
