Will I Lose My WhatsApp Chats When I Switch to the API?

The old fear was real: connecting a number to the WhatsApp API used to wipe the app and its history. Coexistence changed that. Here is what you keep and what you lose.

Short answer: no longer, as long as you use coexistence. Until 2025, moving a number onto the WhatsApp Business API permanently removed it from the WhatsApp Business app and none of your chat history came with it. Since May 2025, Meta's coexistence option lets you connect the same number to the Cloud API while keeping the app installed, your contacts intact, and your conversations flowing. Full migration still wipes the app; coexistence does not.

This single question has stopped more small businesses from upgrading than pricing ever did. You built a customer base inside the WhatsApp Business app, every regular has your number saved, and the thought of losing years of chat threads to gain some automation felt like a bad trade. For a long time it genuinely was. Here is what actually happens now, path by path.

The old way: full migration wiped the app

Before coexistence, there was one route onto the API. You registered your number to the WhatsApp Business Platform, and the moment registration completed, that number was pulled out of both the consumer WhatsApp app and the WhatsApp Business app. The app would sign out and stop working on that number. Chat history did not export or import. Contacts saved on the phone stayed on the phone but were not available to the API platform. You started with a clean, empty inbox on the API side.

That is still exactly what happens if you choose a full migration today. It is the right call for high-volume senders who are going all-in on automation and do not need the app anymore. But it is a one-way door, and for a shop that lives in day-to-day chats, it was a dealbreaker.

The new way: coexistence keeps everything running

Coexistence, which Meta rolled out through its embedded signup in May 2025, removes the all-or-nothing choice. When you connect through the coexistence path instead of a fresh registration, your number links to a WhatsApp Business Account and the Cloud API, but the Business app keeps working on your phone at the same time. You learn the full mechanics on our WhatsApp coexistence page, but here is the short version of what you keep:

  • Your contacts. The contacts saved in your Business app sync over to the API side, so your platform starts with the audience you already message.
  • Your live conversations. Ongoing one-to-one chats keep going. New messages sync in both directions through a feature Meta calls messaging echoes: a reply you tap out on your phone appears in the platform inbox, and a message the platform sends appears in the app.
  • Your app. You keep answering customers from the WhatsApp Business app exactly as before. Nothing about your daily chatting changes.

What you gain on top is the API toolkit: bulk approved template campaigns, scheduling, auto-replies, chatbots, and a shared inbox your whole team can work from the same number.

What coexistence does not carry over

Be honest with yourself about the edges so there are no surprises. A few things stay in the app and are not exposed to the API side: group chats, Status updates, voice and video calls, your catalog and Shop, and WhatsApp Pay. Older chat history handling depends on your provider and Meta's rollout, so the safe expectation is that your saved contacts and all new conversations carry over while deep historical threads keep living in the app. Coexistence also caps sending at roughly 20 messages per second, which is plenty for a small team but below a full API setup.

So which should you pick?

If you are a small or growing team that still handles a lot of chats by hand and cannot afford to lose your customer relationships, coexistence is the clear choice. It is a low-risk on-ramp: you try API automation with a clean way back to the app if it is not for you. If you are a high-volume sender who no longer needs the app and wants maximum throughput, a full migration to the WhatsApp Business API fits better. Many businesses start with coexistence and move to full migration later once volume outgrows the cap.

A note for US businesses

Whichever path you take, one platform-wide rule applies in the United States: Meta paused delivery of marketing category templates to US phone numbers in April 2025, and that pause is not tied to coexistence. Utility templates like order updates, receipts, and reminders still deliver to US numbers, as do replies inside an open 24-hour customer service window. So connecting via coexistence gives a US business the full transactional and support toolkit today, while promotional blasts to US numbers remain on hold across the board.

How to switch without losing anything: a checklist

Most horror stories about lost chats come from picking the wrong path or rushing the setup. Work through this before you connect and you keep what matters:

  • Confirm you are on the Business app, not the personal app. Coexistence connects a WhatsApp Business app number. If you have been running your shop on the regular WhatsApp app, set up the Business app on the number first and use it for a week or two.
  • Update the app and keep it installed. An outdated app can block the connection, and uninstalling it mid-setup is how people actually lose access. Leave it on the phone throughout.
  • Choose the coexistence path, not a new registration. In the signup flow, pick connect an existing WhatsApp Business app. If you instead register the number fresh, you trigger the old full-migration behavior that removes the app.
  • Let the background sync finish. Contacts and recent chats process for a while after onboarding. Do not panic if the platform inbox looks sparse in the first hour; give it time.
  • Test with your own number. Send yourself a message from the app and from the platform to confirm the echo works in both directions before you rely on it.

Follow that and the switch is uneventful, which is exactly what you want. The businesses that lose data almost always skipped the coexistence path or removed the app too early.

Keeping the conversations moving after you connect

Once your number is linked and chats are syncing, the practical worry shifts from losing history to keeping up with volume. This is where automation earns its place: an AI agent that answers and qualifies incoming messages can handle the first response on every synced chat, then hand the ready-to-buy ones to a human. Pair that with a shared inbox and your team answers faster without anyone switching numbers or losing a thread.

The takeaway is simple. The scary version of this question belonged to the pre-2025 world. Today you can add real WhatsApp automation to the number your customers already know without deleting your app or abandoning a single conversation. Start on the coexistence path, keep your history, and grow from there.
