WhatsApp Status Ads and Promoted Channels: What US Advertisers Can Actually Buy

WhatsApp now sells ads in the Updates tab. Here is what Meta actually announced, how Status ads differ from click to WhatsApp ads, what they cost, and why none of it is blocked by the US marketing template pause.

Yes, WhatsApp now carries ads, and no, they do not appear in your chats. Meta sells two placements inside WhatsApp itself: Status ads in the Updates tab, and Promoted Channels in the Channel directory. Both are bought in Meta Ads Manager and billed by auction, exactly like a Facebook or Instagram placement. Neither one is a message, and neither is affected by the pause on marketing template messages to US phone numbers.

This is the single most confused topic in WhatsApp advertising right now, because four different things all get called "WhatsApp ads" and they behave nothing alike. Below is what Meta actually announced, what you can buy today, and how the pieces fit together for a US advertiser.

What Meta actually announced

Meta introduced three monetization features for the Updates tab. Its own wording is worth reading closely, because the vendor coverage has drifted a long way from it.

On Status ads, Meta said you will "be able to find a new business and easily start a conversation with them about a product or service they are promoting in Status". On Promoted Channels, it said it will "help you discover new channels that might be interesting to you when you are looking through the directory". And on subscriptions, that you will "be able to support your favorite channel, such as your favorite news network, by subscribing to receive exclusive updates for a monthly fee".

The placement boundary is stated just as plainly: "Subscriptions, promotions and ads will appear only on the Updates tab, away from your personal chats." Rollout ran globally from late 2025 into 2026, with several EU markets phased in later while regulators reviewed them.

Are there ads in WhatsApp chats?

No. Meta confined every paid unit to the Updates tab, which is the section holding Status posts and Channels. Personal conversations, group chats and calls carry no advertising. Meta also states that "your personal messages, calls and groups you are in will not be used to determine the ads you may see", and that it will "never sell or share your phone number to advertisers".

For targeting, Meta lists a deliberately narrow set of inputs: "limited info like your country or city, language, the Channels you are following and how you interact with the ads you see". That is a much thinner signal than a Facebook or Instagram advertiser is used to, and it is the main reason to treat WhatsApp placements as a reach and discovery buy rather than a precision retargeting one.

Status ads vs click to WhatsApp ads: what is the difference?

A Status ad is a placement inside WhatsApp. A click to WhatsApp ad is a placement outside WhatsApp, on Facebook or Instagram, whose button opens a WhatsApp chat. They solve different problems and they are frequently confused because both end with someone messaging you.

For a US advertiser trying to get conversations started this quarter, click to WhatsApp ads remain the safer bet. They are mature, the targeting is unrestricted, and the 72 hour free entry point window means you can run a real conversation without paying per message. Status ads are worth testing for reach, but the placement is new and the targeting inputs are thin.

Do WhatsApp ads get around the US marketing message pause?

They sidestep it rather than get around it, and the distinction matters. Meta paused delivery of marketing category template messages to US phone numbers on April 1, 2025, and the pause was still in force in August 2026 with no announced end date. That block applies to outbound templates you send to people who opted in. It has nothing to do with ad placements.

So a US business can buy Status ads, buy Promoted Channels, and run click to WhatsApp ads without restriction. What it still cannot do is push a promotional template into the inbox of a US number afterwards. The practical consequence is that ads have become the main way US businesses start WhatsApp relationships, and the conversation itself has to carry the selling. There is a fuller breakdown of which categories deliver and what each costs on our WhatsApp advertising guide.

One trap worth naming: a marketing template can pass Meta's review, sit in your template list marked APPROVED, and still never reach a US handset. The failure happens at send time, not at approval time, and it surfaces as error 131049 (Twilio reports the same event under its own code 63049). Plenty of teams have spent a week rewriting perfectly good copy trying to fix an approval problem they never had.

How much do WhatsApp Status ads cost?

There is no published rate, because Status ads and Promoted Channels are auction inventory. You set a budget and an objective in Ads Manager and pay what the auction clears at, which depends on your targeting, your creative and who else is bidding for the same audience. Anyone quoting a fixed cost per thousand impressions for WhatsApp Status ads is guessing.

What does have a published price is the messaging that follows. Twilio lists a US rate of $0.005 as its own fee plus a $0.0034 Meta pass through for a delivered utility or authentication template, which comes to $0.0084 per message, or $8.40 per thousand. Replies inside an open 24 hour window are free today. Note that Meta does not publish US dollar per message rates in its developer documentation, so a page attributing a US cent figure to Meta is quoting someone else's rate card without saying so.

Budget for one change. From October 1, 2026, any non template reply inside an open 24 hour window becomes chargeable at the utility rate, whether a human or your own automation sends it, and there is no free volume tier. Meta committed to publishing final service message rates on September 1, 2026. If your plan is "run ads, then handle everything in the free window", that plan gets a line item this autumn.

How do you actually buy them?

Everything runs through Meta Ads Manager, not through WhatsApp. There is no separate WhatsApp advertising console.

  1. Connect the business assets. Your WhatsApp Business account needs to sit in the same Meta Business portfolio as the ad account paying for the campaign.
  2. Pick the objective. Engagement or traffic objectives expose the messaging destinations. If you want a Status ad, look for the Updates tab placement rather than a WhatsApp specific campaign type.
  3. Check placement availability. This is the step people skip. Availability is controlled inside Ads Manager rather than announced country by country, so the reliable test is simply whether the placement can be selected for your account and objective. If it cannot, it is not live for you yet.
  4. Build vertical creative. Status is a full screen vertical surface. Recycled square feed creative looks wrong in it. Before committing budget it is worth studying the ad creatives competitors are already running across Meta placements, since a brand new surface rewards the advertisers who show up with native looking assets first.
  5. Plan the reply. An ad that starts a conversation you cannot staff is wasted money. Decide who answers, how fast, and what happens after the free window closes.

Are Promoted Channels worth it for a business?

They are worth it if you genuinely publish. A Channel is a one to many broadcast surface, and subscribers cost nothing to message once they follow you, which makes it one of the few places on WhatsApp where reach is not metered per message. Paying to fill it can therefore pay back over months rather than per campaign.

They are not worth it if you have no publishing habit. Buying subscribers for a Channel you update twice a year is the WhatsApp version of buying followers. Meta positions Promoted Channels as a discovery aid inside the directory, which means you are competing for attention against Channels that post consistently.

Does WhatsApp advertising work for B2B?

Less well than the case studies suggest, in the US at least. The Updates tab is a consumer surface, the targeting inputs are broad, and the marketing template pause removes the follow up sequence that most B2B nurture depends on. WhatsApp earns its place in a US B2B stack after the relationship exists, as a fast channel for a named contact, rather than as a top of funnel acquisition play.

Consumer businesses with a transactional reason to message have the stronger case. Retail, travel, clinics, dealerships and services with appointments all generate utility templates that deliver to US numbers without restriction, which keeps the thread alive between purchases.

What to do with this

Treat WhatsApp advertising as two separate budgets. One is media, spent in Ads Manager on click to WhatsApp ads and, where it is available to you, Status ads and Promoted Channels. The other is messaging, spent per delivered template, and small by comparison. The mistake that wastes money is assuming the second budget can carry promotion to US numbers. It cannot, and it has not been able to since April 2025.

If you are sizing the messaging half, the WhatsApp pricing calculator works out a monthly bill from your own template mix, and the messaging limits calculator shows how long a send takes at your current tier. Before you import anyone, read the opt in rules: consent no longer has to be WhatsApp specific, but it does have to name your business and say the person is opting in to messages.
