Zoko Alternatives for Shopify Stores: Zoko Pricing, the Starter Trap and the 3% Fee
Zoko publishes its markup in dollars, which is rare. The catch is that Starter costs more than Plus above 2,000 conversations a month, and the AI sales agent bills 3 percent of order value.
Zoko is one of the few WhatsApp platforms that publishes its whole price list in US dollars, with the markup written down. That alone puts it ahead of most of the category. But the plan you land on at signup is almost certainly the wrong one, and there is a line further down the page that can cost a growing store more than every plan fee combined.
Here is the short version. Zoko's Starter plan is 49.99 dollars a month and adds a markup of 0.015 dollars on every conversation. The Plus plan is 79.99 dollars a month and includes 5,000 conversations before charging 0.00199 dollars each. The gap between the plans is 30 dollars, and at 0.015 dollars a conversation you burn through that in exactly 2,000 conversations. A Shopify store sending 65 order notifications a day is already past the line and paying more on the cheaper plan.
What Zoko actually charges, from its own pricing page
All four tiers include the core feature set and differ on volume, seats and markup. These are Zoko's published figures, checked September 9, 2026.
| Plan | Monthly | Conversations included | Per conversation after | Agents |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $49.99 | None, markup from the first one | $0.015 | Unlimited, free |
| Plus | $79.99 | 5,000 | $0.00199 | 5, then $15 each |
| Elite | $139.99 | 100,000 | $0.00099 | 10, then $12 each |
| Max | $499.99 | 5,000,000 | $0.00049 | 30, then $9 each |
Read the markup column, not the price column. Zoko's per conversation fee falls by roughly thirty times between Starter and Max. That means your effective cost per message is decided almost entirely by which tier you sit on, and barely at all by the sticker price you compared at signup. Two stores sending the same volume can pay wildly different amounts because one of them never moved off the plan it started on.
For context on how big that Starter markup is: Meta's own rate for a US utility template is roughly a third of a cent. Zoko's Starter markup of 1.5 cents is more than four times the underlying Meta fee it sits on top of. That is not hidden and Zoko deserves credit for printing it, but it does mean that on Starter you are paying the platform considerably more than you are paying WhatsApp.
The line that matters more than any plan price
Zoko sells AI agents as separate add ons at 24.99 dollars a month each. Two of them, the FAQ agent and the order tracking agent, charge 0.09 dollars per resolution after the first hundred. Predictable enough. The third one, the sales agent, is priced at 3 percent of order value after the first hundred orders.
That is a revenue share, not a software fee, and it scales with your success rather than your usage. A store pushing 100,000 dollars a month in chat driven orders through that agent is looking at 3,000 dollars a month, which is six times the top Max plan. There is nothing improper about the model, and for a store that would not have made those sales otherwise it can pay for itself. But it belongs in your forecast, and it does not appear in a single one of the Zoko comparison articles currently ranking, all of which stop at the four plan prices.
Reasons to leave, and where each one points
Most stores looking for a Zoko alternative fall into one of three buckets, and each points somewhere different.
You outgrew the Shopify shaped box. Zoko's strength is that it lives inside a storefront: catalogs, carts, order status, payment collection in chat. If your WhatsApp use has spread past commerce into support queues, appointment reminders or account notifications, you are now paying for storefront plumbing you do not use, and a general purpose platform will fit better.
You want the Meta fee and the platform fee on separate lines. Zoko publishes its markup, which is more than most, but it still blends into a single conversation charge. If you need to audit exactly what Meta billed versus what your provider billed, a pass through provider separates them for you.
Your support team needs a real inbox. This is where stores tend to look at omnichannel platforms, and where the pricing model flips in a way that catches people out. A shared inbox like Trengo bills a seven day conversation thread rather than a message, at roughly 18 cents each once you pass the plan allowance, and it sells broadcasting as a separate paid add on. That is excellent value if agents are genuinely conversing all day and terrible value if you are sending campaigns, which is the trap covered in detail in this Trengo alternative comparison.
Four alternatives, compared on billing model
| Provider | Entry price | How it bills | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zoko | $49.99 / mo | Plan plus a published per conversation markup | Shopify stores selling in chat |
| Twilio | No platform fee | $0.005 per message in and out, Meta fees listed separately | Teams with their own front end |
| 360dialog | €49 / mo per number | Flat per phone number, states no markup on Meta fees | High volume senders who want throughput |
| respond.io | $79 / mo, 5 users | Seats plus monthly active contacts | Sales teams that need routing |
| Trengo | €299 / mo annual | Seven day conversation threads, 10 seat minimum | Multi channel support teams |
Notice that only two of these are really competing with Zoko on the same job. Twilio and 360dialog are infrastructure: they move messages cheaply and leave the campaign building to you. respond.io and Trengo are inboxes: they help humans reply and treat outbound as a secondary feature. Zoko sits in a third position, as a commerce layer, and if that is genuinely what you need then the honest answer is that its published pricing is competitive and you should probably just move up a tier rather than move out.
Do the arithmetic before you switch
Switching WhatsApp providers means a number migration, template re approval and a rebuild of whatever automations you had. It is worth a few hundred dollars a month, not a few dollars. So run the numbers on your real volume first.
Take your monthly conversation count, multiply it by your current plan's per conversation rate, add the plan fee, then add any AI agent charges including that 3 percent line if the sales agent is switched on. Compare that against a pass through provider, where the cost is Meta's rate for your template category plus a flat per message handling fee. The crossover is rarely where people expect it, and it moves with your mix of marketing, utility and authentication templates. The same volume dependent logic applies across the whole category, which is why the cheapest WhatsApp API provider changes depending on how much you send rather than being a fixed ranking.
One more thing worth checking before you blame the platform. If your WhatsApp campaigns are underperforming, the send cost is usually not the problem. A campaign that reaches 5,000 people and lands them on a product page converting at 1 percent is wasting the traffic, not the budget, and doubling the send volume just doubles the waste. That is a conversion rate problem on the page itself, and it is a great deal cheaper to fix than a provider migration.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Zoko cost?
Zoko publishes four plans in US dollars: Starter at 49.99 dollars a month, Plus at 79.99, Elite at 139.99 and Max at 499.99. Each adds a per conversation markup on top of Meta's own WhatsApp fees, ranging from 0.015 dollars on Starter down to 0.00049 dollars on Max. There is a seven day free trial with no card required and no contract.
Does Zoko charge a markup on WhatsApp fees?
Yes, and unusually for this category it publishes the exact figure. The markup is charged per conversation and depends on your plan: 0.015 dollars on Starter, 0.00199 on Plus, 0.00099 on Elite and 0.00049 on Max. Meta's own rate card applies underneath that. Most competing platforms blend the two into one number, so this level of disclosure is a genuine point in Zoko's favor.
Is Zoko good for Shopify stores?
For selling inside a chat thread, yes. Zoko is built around storefront workflows: product catalogs, cart recovery, order status and payment collection in WhatsApp. If your WhatsApp use is mostly commerce, that native fit saves real integration work. It fits less well once your volume shifts toward support, reminders or notifications that have nothing to do with an order.
Which Zoko plan should I be on?
Compare the markup against the plan gap rather than picking the cheapest sticker. Plus costs 30 dollars more than Starter and includes 5,000 conversations, so at 0.015 dollars per conversation on Starter the two plans cost the same at 2,000 conversations a month. Above that, Starter is simply more expensive. Most active stores should not be on Starter at all.
What is the best Zoko alternative for bulk WhatsApp campaigns?
If the job is sending templates to a list on a schedule and reporting on delivery, you want a campaign platform billed per message rather than a commerce layer or an inbox. Zoko's per conversation model is reasonable at volume but it is designed around chat driven selling. Sending to a list is a different product, and paying commerce or inbox prices for it is where the money leaks. If your list already lives in a spreadsheet, sending straight from Excel to WhatsApp skips the import step entirely.
Can I move my WhatsApp number off Zoko?
Yes. Migrating a number between WhatsApp Business Solution Providers is a standard operation on the WhatsApp Business Platform, not something any one vendor controls. Budget for template re approval on the new provider and expect a short window where you should not be running campaigns. Check what happens to your message history, since that generally does not travel with the number.
